4th of July Fireworks with the Nikon D90!



This last 4th of July I had a chance to watch the fireworks in a small town way up in the Cascade Mountains. The town�s fireworks are fired off right next to the river which was a great opportunity for me to capture the reflections of the fireworks on the water. A rushing river isn�t as good as a perfectly flat and calm lake for this type of shot but it will work ok. So I found the only advantage spot the shot would work and planned to get there early to set up. These are two of my favorites from a lot of shots taken and here�s the D90 Settings I used and how I did it.

First you�re going to need a Tripod and a Remote. I used my Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 lens for these shots at 17mm. First set your camera to remote and in settings :C5 set your Remote on Duration to 10 or 15 minutes if it�s not already set. ISO should be set to 200 to reduce noise. Next set you camera to Manual Exposure and rotate the rear Shutter Speed dial to the left until you get to the word BULB. Bulb setting lets you determine with the remote how long you want to leave the shutter open, 1st click the shutter opens 2nd click the shutter closes. This is how you get long exposures. The next D90 setting is your aperture. Rotate the Aperture dial on the front of your D90 to set this setting. These photos were taken with the aperture set at F/8 but you can play with this setting. I�ve taken fireworks pictures with the aperture set up to as far as f/18. The last camera set up is to set the D90 to manual focus and focus out to infinity. To focus to Infinity means to turn your focus ring all the way to the left or right where everything in the distance is in focus. I think their is a infinity symbol also on your lens. After the fireworks start you can play with the manual focus but infinity seems best. That�s it for the D90 setup.

Now it�s time to fire off some test shots of the beginning fireworks to get the framing you like. Now for the timing, as soon as you hear the fireworks shoot off into the sky click the remote one time (opening the shutter). Wait until the big explosion in the sky happens and click again (closing the shutter) Check you framing and adjust. Now you�re set to capture away�.play with different exposure times and see what you get. That�s it, and that�s how I got my shots. My exposure times for these two shots were 5.1 and 7.6 seconds.

Smoke Photography with the Nikon D90!



Stuck in the house on a rainy day? Try some smoke photography for some indoors fun! Do you see in the image a profile of an old sea mariner with his hat and long beard, lol

So i decided to give this smoke photography a go and it turned out not so bad. Here's how i shot these photos with my D90 and what you'll need.

First I stopped by the fabric store and bought a yard and a half of black fabric for the background. Then I stopped at a smoke shop and got some incense sticks to use for the smoke. When i got home i waited until it was dark outside and went to work. I set the black fabric material up behind the table I was using, (make sure you set the background back pretty far because you don't want any light to hit it) next I stuck the incense stick in some wax and put it on a plate on the table.

Now for the flash and light. I used my SB600 flash off camera in commander mode and dialed down the power to -3.0. Next was the tricky part, I made a cone with a black piece of 8x10 craft paper and slid it on the flash and aimed the cone at were the smoke would be. Again the reason for this was to try and keep the light from the flash off the background. Next i got out my little head lamp and aimed it also at the spot (opposite side from the flash) the smoke would be. This was so I could manual focus on the smoke I was shooting in the dark. (you can leave this light on the whole time your snapping pictures so you can focus.

Now that i got everything set up I was ready to set up the D90. I put on my Tamron 17-50 lens and set the camera to aperture priority and went with f/8 and F/11. Since I was shooting flash the shutter speed was auto at 200. I did not use a tripod which made things a lot easier.

I fired up the incense and started snapping away at the smoke and that was it basically. When I was done I deleted the bad ones and uploaded the good ones to Photoshop elements 6 and started working with them.

Use your invert button to get a white background and back to get the black background. To add color I used the hue and saturation slider and played with that. To add color to specific areas I used the selection command and while selected I used the hue and saturation which works great! Anyway that's it...I hope you give it a try I'm sure I'll be doing some more soon.

Nikon D90 Mirror Lock -Up?



Mirror Lock up (MLU) what is it and does the D90 have it?

What: Mirror lock-up (often abbreviated to MLU) is a feature employed in many Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras. It allows the operator to reduce vibration-induced motion blur during exposure. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Does the Nikon D90 have it? Unfortunately no but it does have a pretty darn good alternative. This is called Exposure Delay Mode, Page 183 of your manual. It's says, "In situations where the slightest camera movement can blur pictures, Exposure Delay Mode On can be selected to delay shutter release until about 1 second after the shutter release button is pressed and the mirror is raised".

I definitely see myself trying this mode next time i'm using my tripod for a landscape shot or something! Seems like a no brainier to me if I might get an even sharper photo. I've read mostly good things about how this isn't "True MLU" like some camera's have but those who have tried both say the D90's Exposure Delay Mode is a pretty good alternative to the "True MLU". What do you Think?

Nikon D90 and Hummingbirds!



I got a few questions from people asking how i got this photo, so i thought I'd explain my set up!

I picked up a hummingbird feeder at the store and set it up in a tree in my backyard so it was hanging just off my deck behind our BBQ. I used the big BBQ as a kind of blind I could sit behind. I set up the tripod and placed the d90 on it and focused on the hummimgbird feeder so I would be close to focus when the hummer arrived to feed. I set my camera to shutter speed and dialed in 1/2500 exposure. Aperture was set on F5.6. Focal length with the nikon 70-300mm vr lens was 250mm with VR off. I set my metering to center-weighted average and auto-focus to Dynamic Area. ISO was at 800 so I could get the faster shutter speed without the picture being to dark. Even at ISO 800 I still had to bump up the exposure compensation to +2 to get more light. That seemed to work best. My white balance was set manual to sunny but I'm sure auto would have worked fine.

For over 3 days I played with different setting and my speedflash trying to find what worked best for me and these setting I used for this photo seemed to be the best. It was fun capturing these little guys coming into feed i hope you give it a try and post your best shot so we can all see.

Full Moon Photography with the Nikon D90!



We have a full moon coming in a few days and i thought I'd go over how i set up my D90 to photograph it! The photo above was taken from my back porch last full moon. First you probably want to wait until the moon is hi in the sky and really dark outside for the best results. You'll want at least a 300mm lens but a 200mm lens will also work. If your using a lens with VR don't forget to turn it off while your D90 is on the tripod. Get your Tripod set up with your D90 and set you camera to Manual (M) on the dial. Set your metering to, Center-weighted metering (not that important but i like to do this) and Manual focus. Next set your aperture to F/11 and shutter speed to 1/400 for starters. Get out your remote release to fire off your shots... Adjust your exposure as you shoot to get it just right. The exposure settings I have given are just a good starting point for you and is what I used on the photo above. That's it, Have Fun! With the 2009 4th of July just days from now this is my first opportunity to use my D90 to shot the fireworks so i was looking around for the best advice to get some great shots and i found this info. Nikon D90 and HDR Photos!

I'm a big HDR fan and love doing it as much as possible. I'm sure you have seen tons of HDR (high dynamic range) photos all over the place lately. If your interested in trying it yourself i can suggest a couple of programs you will need. I personally use Dynamic Photo HDR by Media Chance but most people use Photomatix by HDR soft. Both work great in my opinion but Dynamic Photo HDR is cheaper to buy.

The photo i did above of the water fall was done using my D90 and Dynamic Photo HDR software.

Waterfalls with the Nikon D90!



Waterfall photography is one of the things i like to do any chance i get! This last weekend i woke up to a nasty rainy day and did not want to spend my day off setting around the house. I googled waterfalls in my area and found this place only 30 minutes away from my house were it said these falls only happen after a good rain.

So i grabbed the family and all my gear and out the door we went. Timing is everything when shooting waterfalls, and a overcast day is best in my opinion since sunny days can cause bad highlights in waterfalls because of the shutter speed you need to use. The key to getting that silky smooth moving water effect requires a longer shutter speed of 1 - 2 seconds or what i used in this shot of 1/3 of a second.

So here's the basic set-up i used with my D90 to get this shot. I put on my Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 lens and a Hoya Polarizer filter and mounted the D90 on my tripod. I then found a good vantage spot in the water were i didn't get to wet (thanks to gore-tex boots) and set the camera to manual exposure. I set my aperture to F/10 and the shutter speed to 1/3 of a second to get that silky smooth moving water effect i was looking for and started shooting away with my remote release and that was basically it! Everything else on the D90 was standard.

I hope you get a chance to photography some waterfalls this way because it's pretty darn fun and easy! For more advanced techniques on shooting waterfalls here's a good web site you might like.

I'm still learning the best way to use it, When i get it right my photos have come out great. I use it off camera with the commander mode and boy is that fun. As a freelance I have to capture the images that magazines want and 99 plus% want everything in glorious colour. So, as I no longer have a darkroom, the only way for me to satisfy my craving for black and white is to convert suitable colour images to monochrome using my trusty computer.

Grayscale Mode
The simplest and quickest way was how I started and that was just to change the mode in Photoshop from RGB to Grayscale. I opened the picture, went to 'Image' in the Menu Bar and selected 'Mode' then selected 'Grayscale' from the drop down menu. This brought up a dialogue box asking if I wanted to discard all colour information. I clicked 'OK' and the job was done. I was then able to adjust the monochrome image to my liking. It couldn't get any easier. 'Easy-peasey,' as Jamie Oliver would say.

So, with the image open, go to 'Image>Mode>Grayscale' then 'Discard color information'.

In Photoshop Elements the process is the same.

Desaturate Method
As easy is the use of the 'Desaturate' command. With the original colour picture open, go to 'Image' select 'Adjustments' and 'Desaturate' from the drop down menu. The result is very similar to the Grayscale method and can also be achieved by going to 'Hue/Saturate' and reducing the 'Saturation' slider to -100.

In Photoshop Elements, go to 'Enhance>Adjust color>Remove color'.

Channel Mixer Method
Now we come to a slightly more complicated method but one that gives a higher control than the previous two. Once again, with the original colour picture open, go to 'Image' and select 'Adjustments' then select 'Channel Mixer' from the drop down menu. This will bring up the Channel Mixer dialogue box with sliders for the Red, Green and Blue channels. When opened the sliders will be set for 100% red and 0% for the other two channels. Before you do anything, select the Monochrome box at the bottom left of the dialogue box. Then have a look at the image with 100% for each of the other two colours in turn and 0% for the rest. The results will depend upon the majority of colours in the original. You may find that one of the channels suits you perfectly, in which case you can ignore the other two by leaving them at 0 and click on 'OK'.

However, it will probably be the case that you can get a better result by mixing bits of each channel. I start generally by reducing the Red to about 50 or 60 and increasing Green to 20 to 30 and the Blue to whatever makes up 100 - you don't have to end up with 100 but the results are normally better if you do. Once I have made the initial changes, it is a matter of trial and error to come up with the best result.

The Constant slider allows adjustments of the finished image - sliding to the left produces a darker result and to the right, a lighter one. I have found that I rarely adjust this.

There is no equivalent in Photoshop Elements.

LAB Mode
Another method that produces generally good results is to use the LAB Mode. With the colour image open, go to 'Image' and select 'Mode' then choose 'Lab color'. In the Layers Window, select 'Channels' which will give you four channels, LAB, Lightness, A and B. Go to channel A and select it all then delete it. Repeat this for channel B and then go to the Lightness channel. Go to 'Image>Mode>Grayscale' click 'OK' in the dialogue box that asks whether you want to discard the other channels and you have a monochrome image to adjust to your satisfaction.

There is no equivalent in Photoshop Elements.

Any one of the completed operations above will provide me with a useable monochrome image of the particular colour image that I selected to begin with. However, all require additional work to make them into more than just a basic monochrome picture.

As you have seen, and as with so many operations in Photoshop, it is possible to get to an end result in various ways and the ones I have outlined are not the only ones that will provide a conversion to monochrome. Some swear by one method or another but I find that while I have a tendency towards the channel mixer method, there are times when it doesn't produce the result I am after. Then I will try one of the alternative methods and am pleased that I know more than one. And, sometimes, I find an interesting result that I was not expecting and that takes me down a path that I was not anticipating.

Photography: How to Avoid Red-Eye in Flash Photos

What is red-eye, and why does it happen?
We�ve all seen it in snapshots we�ve either taken ourselves, or been shown by others: the pupils of your subject�s eyes are lit up in a devilish bright red color, unlike anything we�re used to seeing in real life. And of course, you never saw it in your camera�s viewfinder when you took the picture.

What is happening is that the pupil of a person�s eye, even though it appears to be black when we view it, is actually clear. Since the inside of the eyeball is normally never illuminated, we see it as a small black circle. But in some flash photos, if the flash is close to the lens of the camera, its illumination sends a burst of light right through to the rear of the inside of the subject�s eyeball. The retina of your subject�s eyes is rich in red blood vessels, and this produces the bright red color we see in the pictures.

If the flash is close enough to the lens, the light not only enters your subject�s inner eye, but can then reflect straight back out and actually be recorded by the camera. With the retina in your subject�s eye now fully illuminated, you get the tell-tale bright red glow that we all now know as "red-eye." So the first thing to know is that for all intents and purposes, red-eye in photos is a flash phenomenon. It�s very unlikely you�ll encounter it using sunlight, or available light only when shooting indoors.

Using the built-in flash:
Cameras like the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT and XTi have a built-in flash, that pops upwards an inch or two for easy and convenient flash photography � at least, as long as your subjects are not too far away. And nearly every compact digital camera has a built-in flash as well. Since many of these cameras are so small in size, the designers are often forced to put the built-in flash nearly right next to the lens. Any time you use a built-in flash that�s close to the lens, you run the risk of occasionally getting red-eye in any pictures with people in the scene.

Obviously, you can�t physically move the built-in flash away from the camera lens. So manufacturers have resorted to another feature: Red-Eye Reduction.

Red-eye Reduction:
The idea of this feature is that by one means or another, the camera sends out light to your subject before the picture is taken. Since the subject�s pupils normally tend to dilate, or get wider, in dim light (and get smaller in bright light conditions), the idea is to reduce the level of red-eye by making the user�s pupils appear smaller before the picture is taken. With smaller pupils, there�s less area to be marred by red-eye, and even if it does show up in your pictures, it�ll tend to be less noticeable.

Some cameras do this by rapidly flashing the flash unit with "pulses" of flash illumination, for a second or two before the picture is taken. The hope is that your subject�s eyes will react to these rapid pops of light and the pupils will become smaller. A moment later, that actual picture is taken, with the flash firing again, but at (usually) greater power.

Canon�s cameras take a different approach, using a small, built-in lamp to shine continous white light directly at your subject for about two seconds, prior to the picture being taken. In fact, a scale appears on EOS digital SLRs with this feature in the viewfinder, to count down the two seconds that this red-eye reduction lamp is active, so that you know when to fully press the shutter button and take the picture. Again, the idea is that this added light before the picture is taken will cause the subject�s pupils to contract, and therefore reduce the level of red-eye if it appears.

It�s important to understand that neither of these approaches to in-camera red-eye control ever claim to completely eliminate the chance of getting visible red-eye. As the feature�s name says, it�s red-eye reduction, not red-eye elimination.

Using accessory speedlites:
Since an accessory flash unit (like Canon�s Speedlite 430EX, or 580EX) is larger and sits on top of the camera, the flash unit itself is raised several inches above the lens. The flash-emitting part of these units is nowhere near as close to the lens as in the case of a built-in flash. This distance between lens and flash means that right from the start, you�re less likely to get red-eye in your pictures. Let�s be clear: we�re not saying you won�t or can�t get red-eye in pictures taken with an accessory flash unit, only that because it starts out being a few inches farther from the lens, you can often avoid the probem in your shots of people.

Distance plays a key role in red-eye:
It�s a fact that the farther you are from a subject, the more likely you are to get red-eye in your flash pictures of people. The farther away you are from a subject, the more the flash illumination tends to be parallel to a straight line entering your camera lens. If flash illumination can go straight into your subject�s pupils, and then reflect straight back out again, you�ll see it as red-eye in your pictures. But if instead it�s at a slight angle relative to the "axis" that the lens is seeing, you�ll usually avoid that direct kick-back of light into the camera, and the subject�s pupils will usually appear the normal black color.

So to avoid red-eye, try to do the following:

1. Where possible, try to step physically closer to your subjects. This doesn�t mean be only inches away, but if you have a choice of taking that birthday party shot from 15 feet away, with your zoom lens at a telephoto setting, or stepping to about 6 feet away with the lens at a wider-angle setting, you�re much less likely to get red-eye from the 6 foot distance.

2. Try to resist using telephoto zoom settings in flash pictures of people. It�s not that telephoto lenses have anything to do directly with red-eye � they don�t � but any tele lens encourages you to stand back at a greater distance from your subject(s). It�s this added distance that increases the chances of red-eye.

Other techniques to avoid red-eye:

1. Bounce flash
If you�re using an accessory speedlite with bounce capability, and if you�re shooting indoors in a room with relatively low, light-colored ceilings, you can tilt your flash head upward so it shines at the ceiling, and then �bounces� back down to your actual subject(s). If done properly, this will totally eliminate any possibility of red-eye appearing in your flash pictures. The reason is that the flash illumination actually striking your subject is now coming downward, from the ceiling.

Remember that your ceiling must be white or near-white (if it�s colored, the returning light hitting your subject will take on that color � it�s no fun to eliminate red-eye, only to have an entirely red subject from that red-painted ceiling). And the other thing is that you need a standard ceiling height � somewhere around 8 to 12 feet. Bounce flash obviously won�t work in the open outdoors, and you can�t expect it to work in a large ballroom, or in a high-school gym. Finally, you�ll need to experiment and practice somewhat to get the hang of how far upward to tilt your flash head, depending upon how far away you are from your subjects (unlike direct flash, with bounce, you�re actually better off taking a step or two away from your subject, to get your light coming down at an angle instead of from directly above).

2. Use a third-party flash bracket
You�ve no doubt seen this one at every wedding you�ve been to: the pro photographer who�s shooting the wedding has his or her flash mounted on a contraption that holds it way, way above the camera. It looks totally awkward, but the pro using it has a point: by moving the flash well above the lens and its optical axis, he or she has much less concern that red-eye will appear in their flash photos. These brackets come in styles that �rotate� or �flip�, as well as completely rigid types. The rotating brackets let you position the flash head above the lens, regardless of whether you�re shooting horizontal or vertical pictures. With the rigid types, your flash may be positioned way off to one side if you turn the camera to take a vertical picture.

Canon doesn�t market these brackets, but many third-party companies do, in a wide variety of styles, degrees of ruggedness, and price points. Well-stocked camera stores usually have them on-hand. And to retain your E-TTL flash, use Canon�s Off Camera Shoe Cord 2, with one end attached to your camera�s hot shoe, and the other attached to your bracket�s flash shoe. Now, the flash will be as automatic as if it was directly on top of the camera.

3. Take the flash off the camera
Using either the Off Camera Shoe Cord 2, or Canon�s wireless E-TTL flash system, remove your flash entirely from the camera and position it elsewhere. By moving it off-camera, you virtually eliminate any possibility of red-eye. Using either the Speedlite 430EX, or the 580EX in their �slave� mode, and triggering them with an optional Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2, it�s easy to get fully automatic flash exposure, with the flash up to 20 feet or more away from the camera. The ST-E2, combined with one of these speedlites, is a great combination for effective bounce flash shooting as well, whether you�re holding a single flash off-camera in one hand, or using multiple flash units to evenly light a room or area.

4. Use available light, and don�t shoot with flash
In some conditions indoors, or at night, you can get beautiful, natural-looking pictures by simply turning off your flash, setting a higher ISO, and using natural light to take pictures. Try this along with flash pictures in different scenes, and you�ll develop a sense of when to revert to this technique. It certainly eliminates any chance of seeing red-eye.
