Zombie speed painting demo

Zombie speed painting demo, here is another video and step by step digital painting tutorial instruction. I had no idea that Zombies are so much fun to draw and paint until recently. You pretty much can add or subtract what you prefer from basic human anatomy to fit your liking. Personally, I like Zombies' version from 28 days later. But recently, I have to admit that the slow moving ghouls are a lot more appealing as I envision them more. Romero's Zombies rule!

But before Romero's Zombies was inspired by The 1954 publication of Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend." It is the story of a future Los Angeles, overrun with undead bloodsucking beings. Notable as influential on the zombie genre is the portrayal of a worldwide apocalypse due to the infestation, in addition to the initial conception of vampirism as a disease (a scenario comparable to recent zombie media such as Resident Evil). Anyway, like art, certain subject has appeal that inspires people to further develop or adopt the genre (I not sure what I was trying to say).
Now I am reading the book called "The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead" by Max Brook. It is very interesting and has a lot of great information, but I think the author takes his subject very serious. Well, you never know, we often fantasize about the apocalypse since the dawn of mankind. Who knows how we will end up, but we certainly know why. Our kind are very destructive, and eventually might spiral into self destruction. Unless enough people have the will power to fix or undo what we've been doing wrong.
Wow, that was quite a serious paragraph, considering this is a drawing and painting blog. Any way, below are the recent Zombie dude I did.

painting comics panel step by step

Painting comics panel step by step.  Today sketch is one of the panels from the horror comics I am working on.  Now I am on page 4.  In the beginning, I start of with speedie style, then somehow I end up spending too much time on just one panel.  I did that for four to five panels, and that was not the plan I had in mind because it was taking way to long to finish one.  This one take me about four to six hours to finish because I keep going back and forth.  Also the rendering is a bit too polish than what I had in mind.
So the next panel would be something of a more sketchy and I am stylizing all the characters.  I think there is a reason for stylizing a character.  Wednesday and Thursday I only finish two and a half panels.  Friday, I finished more than 5 panels in one day.  Big different in time spend and it is more spontaneous and fun. First, it is easier and faster to draw than realistic approach.  Second, it is a lot easier to get more consistency when you try to make them look alike.  So I am going to stick with that for a few weeks and see how it turns out.

Master painter quote, "If I got it right every time, there would be little sense of accomplishment." ~Richard Schmid

Anyway, here is one of the panel

Mohawk Zombie speedpainting

Here is another quick speedpainting step by step how to. This one takes me about an hour and a half. I actually start one zombie before this one, but it didn't turn out well. So I throw it away and start new one from scratch.
This speed painting, what I am trying to achieve most is the mood of the piece and play around with lighting that was lid from behind the character.
The process is very familiar to you guys already if you are frequent visitors to my blog. I started off with, first, scribble construction lines to find pose, figure and composition. Then I turned those lines into shapes and rearrange to make the shapes more interesting to look at. And from those shapes, I then pick the light source and start to establish basic values. From that point on, you can just keep working in monochromatic until you get to the point that you are confident enough to introduce your second colors and so on. Then keep the temperature of the piece harmonize, as well as color in balance between cool and warm.

Mohawk Zombie!

This is actually one of the panel of the horror story I am working on, see More Walking Dead Zombies, How to draw Zombie digital painting, and female character design sketch.  Yes, all these three post I mentioned are related into my horror story line or at least I hope eventually so.  I am trying to make it as quick as I can but I keep get distracted from many things. It's that time of the year, holiday is coming up. There are so many distractions but I will try to keep update as many time as I can. Have fun with the tutorial.

More walking dead ZOMBIEs yeah!

More walking dead ZOMBIEs yeah!
Well, nothing too exciting to post except for these new sequential panels of brain and flesh eating bastards, them zombies. I know I make a few attempt to do my own comics but never finish one yet. So now I just try not to come up with my own original idea totally. I will just work off from existing idea and make short comics from them, hopefully I can finish 30-40 pages story. I really need to finish at least one short comics in my art career, right. ;)
Anyway, I got really inspired after watching "28 days later" for the 22nd time, but who wouldn't. Then I start reading the book called "Biohazard" by Tim Curran, very cool apocalyptic setting with variety of zombies like creatures. And now I am about to start reading thriller suspense novel called "The blonde" by Duane Swierczynski. It gets really good review. Hopefully all the cool stuff will rub off on my idea.
Anyway, these are just the first sequential set, more to come. And 30-40 pages should be a high probability that I would most likely finish it. Wish me luck if you like to see Zombies short story from me. ;)
Here are some Zombie art, hope it makes sense. Words and captions will come way way way later when I finish the the whole nine art!

Digital painting process final step Zombie Hunters

Digital painting process final step "Zombie Hunters." You can take a look at the previous steps below:
It took me a little while to finish it up.
At this process of painting, it isn't much to say, except clean up the color and tighten up the overall values. And I notice that the mood or the overall values of the images is a lot darker than any of my previous painting.
I think because I just got a new LG monitor about a week ago, about 27 inches (I've been working on my Dell XPS 17" for the past five years), the color and everything look very awesome on that screen. Plus it HUGE and clear...I can see a lot better and I love it a lot more. Though I guess...the final image I worked on turns out pretty dark on my other monitors (at work or laptop). I will have to investigate that a bit. Anyway, here is a final version of Zombie Hunters concept design. More stuff to come. have fun.

Here is the Zombie Hunter Squad concept.

If you composition doesn't work, do it over.

If you composition doesn't work, do it over. Yep, that's the only solution. That's why we, artists, do a lot of thumbnails (or nowadays could be speedpainting test) to work out the composition and lighting before we actually go in and do the real painting and refinement of whether digital or traditional. It will safe us a lot of time and effort and the illustration or painting will turn out better than if you trying to go from zero to nowhere. Though it may work from time to time just doodling and messing around, but it's not the way to go if you really have a serious assignment from the real project or from clients. ;)
As what I did previously with the girl (zombie hunter girl), I was just paint on the go aimlessly. For doodling, it works because you explore and do whatever you feel like without any sort of framework or deadline. I did have some idea, but it was NOT solid or there is no thesis in the idea of that illustration and it conveys thru the image. Not a good example for a solid project...but possibly good show for the doodling in sketchbook style aimlessly and just practice.

Anyway, so I am doing it over since I didn't really want to scrap it. It has some potential to be a good piece. So I gather my thought together and trying to put together pieces and find my theme of the image and what I could do with the character. So since her pose is very relax and more comfortable with the surrounding, I should put her with the teammate or some sort of character that will not intensify the scene (like her enemies). And muddling around and find the fit composition that would put it together nicely and it turns out better than the previous image (How to draw a Zombie digital painting). So I decided to put the gasmask dude from the previous drawing video tutorial, gas-mask apocalypse rogue soldier, in there since they are in the same gang. And here it is. ***though I took the Zombies out, don't worry....they will be back in NEXT!***

Painting color over monochromatic sketch portrait step by step

Painting color on monochromatic sketch portrait step by step. Digital painting tutorial, I know a lot of artists start off monochrome or achromatic then go color and others start off with color.
In this tutorial is just demonstrated one approach from many. So try out different ways will be good for you, and just go with what you feel comfortable most.
Here is a quick post for those of you who wonder how to go from monochrome to color. It's kind of tricky with skin tone, basically you just have to define the existing value and paint over. But since you already have the monochrome base, it will probably safe you almost half of the time than start doing it with color right off the bat.
Sometimes I do start with base color that's close to skin hues, and sometimes I start with black and white. It works both ways, and I think it's good to be able to do it both way. Anyway, good sketching and practice for me. I haven't been doing much painting recently, but I will try to sketch and speedpaint and post them as much as I can. :)

Enjoy

You can also go see the video how to draw this below face here: How to draw comics batgirl.

Also as I am changing the composition a bit since I pay too much attention on the face alone already. And adding a shotgun pistol instead of the typical ones. Hope it will work out and done soon.... spending way too much time thinking changing, tweaking,... this is what happen when you try to improvise and didn't plan your painting from the get go.

Still much work to be done so to be continued.

Gas-mask apocalypse rogue soldier sketch tutorial

Gasmask apocalypse rogue soldier sketch tutorial, character thumbnail concept sketch. Since I've been playing around with zombie idea and the zombie hunter's weapons in the previous post, how to draw Zombie digital painting tutorial. I was thinking about having the female character has a mace, but then shotgun and flamethrower were suggest by our friends and readers.
Since Flamethrower is one of my favorite arsenal of weapons of all time doesn't matter what game I was playing...with flamethrower, it always make it waaaaaaaaaaay better!

Since I could not possibly squeeze in flamethrower or flame-gun into the previous illustration because. IT IS BIG and will possibly change the look and the characteristic or persona of the character I already established. I decided to quickly sketch an addition cast to the Zombie hunting horde. The creepy gas-mask rogue soldier steampunk-ish dude.

Anyway, it was a fun.

Drawing tutorial Zombie Ninja character design

Drawing tutorial Zombie Ninja character design. Well, the last post I did about the first edition of drawing the color sketch zombie ninja (see Manga tutorial drawing zombie ninja it also include many of ninja drawing tutorial links.)didn't really fit what I had in mind. It came out like a sub-par quality which is kind of disappointing. So I did another quick character design again last night. Most of the important elements of the character I keep, like the goggles, darts, pants (almost Hakama like), etc. This time it is creepier, darker and more menacing. Just like what I actually want the character to be.

If you are a beginner, look for more video tutorial on male body, anotomy and such go watch Drawing body muscle torso anatomy tutorial. And Drawing arm muscles bicep tricep There will also be some basic include there. Then you could try out the following tutorial.

Anyway, here is my revenge on my own drawing. ANOTHER version (better) of the same character. I am going to name him "Kenishi" and for sure he will be in Kapow Express. Yes, there will be some Japanese Empire army involve because the time line fall into WWII in the Pacific. But I am not sure why is there a zombie ninja. You will have to follow the Manga comics, ha ha.

Art Tips: From time to time, Doodle with an ballpoint pen. It will get a rid of your bad noodling habits, make you more decisive and have less FEAR of putting down a REAL confident manly line. -Xia

I decided the change the weapons in stead of duo Katana, I replace it with unconventional weapon like Kama because I think it's creepier and sort of unexpected.
