Q: I love the one with Miss Portman. I just wish there was more explanation about what you were doing when you are laying down the underpainting, as well as screen shots of what you were doing in phothshop. Do you have any real time paintings that show you going step by step through the program?

A: Thanks, I often sometimes miss some content that I want to explain on certain videos, but mostly I try to spell out what I know. I wish I know more, really. If you want to know how to select color and palette, Richard Schmidth's book is what I highly recommend. He explain value, color, and how to figure. He is one of the best contemporary artist/ Oil painter. Color and value Principle also apply the same to digital painting. It's one of the best book ever recommended to me. He is a true master. -Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting (Richard Schmidth) -Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner: Basic Lessons in Becoming a Good Painter

Great Exercises for you and anyone.
-Practice gray scale illustration (from black to white or acromatic) get it nail down as much as you could.
-Practice drawing using ONLY Black and White
-Do a gray scale painting and add one color (with its value) (monocromatic)
-Do a gray scale and apply three colors palette.
These should help you understand how to apply color

As for a real time video, there are good reason people and I won't do it. 1) No one would really have the patience to watch it for full half hours or 40 mins. 2) They won't let me upload that big of a file. Keep practicing, for us artist that's the best way to learn...there is no short cut. Also keep watching everyday as I progress...or hoping to get better also :)

Q: Xia, when you are drawing the values on Portman's face, what colors were you using from the color palette and how were you selecting your colors?

A: I actually focus on the value primary, then edge...color is not really my focus they come from my palette. The outcome is pretty much the result of the value and edge in my painting (sound confused, but it really is not). Look for Ander Zorn, he can paint using only 5 colors limited palette. Try to get cool and warm in balance.

Q: Are there more tutorials for photoshop out there that show step by step drawing and the settings and selections they are making on the palette for photoshop?

A: Don't worry so much about color or palette UNLESS you are aiming for school of Monet style and early impressionism. VALUE (lighting) is more important to me, and simplify value if you are going for manga or anime illustration. I hope I make some sense. Personally, color choice is a mere decision or arrangement of cool and warm (temperature) of over all pic and how vibrant you want it to be. Keep it simple. :) If you really want to know more, Schmidth (-Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting by Richard Schmidth) is the best book on painting, everything value and color.

A: Honestly, um....that's a very difficult subject to define the principle on lighting (value) and color (hue). Also temperature is important. It's difficult and will be a long explanation.
I would highly recommend:
-Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting
-Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner: Basic Lessons in Becoming a Good Painter
-Digital Character Painting Using Photoshop CS3 (Graphics Series)

These books are more in depth than I could really explain in words. Alla Prima is my most favorite one. Also these things take time, dedication, practice and keen observation. Good luck.

hello! I saw your page. I draw girls.
and i love it! I just wonder what program you use. as I once use photoshot... but i dont think I would be able to draw...
I intend to get the materials. of course is only a hobby, I just want to try and see if i can do it.
could you help me by sugessting what program and how to start drawing with the pen. please....

Um... that's going to be a long reply and interesting subject. As a hobby, I would recommend a real medium, IT IS MUCH MORE FUN!!! Get a sketch book 9 x12 and BIG pad 17' and up. Get regular pencil, Big, medium size charcoal cube and draw away your day!!! It would be nice if you could add a small water color set just in case you need some color in your life!!! (Pastal sticks are fun also, your choice!!!) DRAW BIG with your arm is what I recommend when you get a chance...then draw small when you need to do something detail. Photoshop if you already have, it's one of the best out there. You just have to practice and get use to it. Good luck! :)

Q: I've always wanted to be with animals, so I wanted to be a vet, but if I draw pictures of animals then I can also be with animals. Please draw more animals. I am 10 and would like to become artistis young, I will be patient and wait for you though thank you. I don't have a computer program, so I free hand it. I haven't checked out everything at your site, but do you free hand anything? Also How do you come up with easy ways to draw pictures?

Free hand is the best practice for drawing, there is no need for a computer really. It's better to interact with actual pencil and paper. :)

Though, for me, It's difficult to set up camera, lighting, and ect to make a video tutorial free handed. It takes longer time, also disadvantage is that...my hand will usually gets in the way of drawing itself.
I used computer record because I only have about 30 mins or so a day off of my other obligation, and it's the fastest way I can show people how to draw.

YES, there will be more animal. And I am also working on a 13 and below-friendly site. Hopefully it will come in times.
Easy way to draw picture? I donno...I just draw as I usually draw first then I reverse engineer my process and think how does it come together by analyzing my drawing technique. I like to simplify things for those cartoon tutorials so that people who just start out will be able to do so...I guess. :)
