I happened to see this while I was browsing for accessories. I can't believe it is still available. I bought mine back in, I think Spring '04. I'd had an older digital and it was time to upgrade. After much searching and reading, I settled on this camera. I have not been disappointed. Even though it is 4 megapixels and I have it set down to about 3.2, I get beautiful, clear, sharp pictures-still. The difference I have found is in the lens. The German made Schneider, Kreuznach lens (not sure of the sp here)makes a world of difference in the picture quality. I've looked at newer camera's (more megapixels) and of course noted the lens type, but to tell you the truth, this little 6440 gets such great quality I can't quite justify getting a new one.
Even on it's normal auto setting I am able to catch action shots of my granddaughter sliding and swinging, even water mid-air. I haven't even bothered with the action setting.
The only complaint I have, and it really doesn't qualify as one, is the telephoto shots are blurred- I get around that when editing in zooming and cropping, and when I take several shots in a row (not needing burst) the shutter speed slows down. A good choice still for a point and shooter and for great vacation pics.
2008--I still have this camera although I have looked at newer models with higher megapixels. I worked out the telephoto thing, I have to hold still, and then it usually turns out clear and sharp. In comparing it with the newer models this camera is still outstanding. Just on auto it takes crystal clear, sharp and detailed action shots. I recently went to a Pow Wow and caught beautiful action shots of the dancing, everyone commented on how professional they looked, like a postcard. And I'm no photographer. And the color it captures is wonderful. I friends and relatives who have picked up I think the Z1012, and mine is better. So other than he low pixels not making good enlargements, I'm not giving it up.

I tried to buy this camera through Amazon but it remains unavailable or inadequately priced thus I went to a local dealer to get it for the MSRP. I'm a hobby photographer upgrading from a 50D since I needed a second camera for my wildlife trips. I was hesitant to go with the 7D since there does not seem to be a substantial difference in IQ to the 50D (in fact some serious reviews state it's even worse!). I'm writing this after having taken some couple of thousends pictures in Costa Rica during a recent vacation. To say it upfront: The IQ is otherwordly good compared to the 50D (and even to my 5DMII). I could take pictures of monkeys and birds in the shaded rainforest at ISO up to 12,800 that are more than usable. The fast burst rate is of course extremely helpful. The AF certainly is something you have to become familiar with (read manual and white paper) and get used to. I took some tack sharp pictures using my 500mm F4 IS lens (without tripod!) but I'm still far away from being fully capable of using the AF in AIservo. Also, the spot AF enables you to catch distant subjects and get them tack sharp. Handling of the camera is much better compared to the 50D as expected from a 1D series camera; especially the option to use the vertical format is appreciated. The only minor criticism I have is the charger which is huge like a brick and does not have any advantage because you cannot charge two batteries in parallel anyway! Wonder what canon thought when releasing this ...
In conclusion, if you can afford the price tag, go for the 1D Mark IV. You will appreciate it.

I bought this camera a month or so ago after my old Canon S400 was stolen. I needed an affordable camera quick since we were going on a 2 week trip to europe. When I found this camera for about 0, I jumped on it.

The camera takes great pictures, although dark light can be tough (like most cameras). The movie mode works well. The size is small enough to fit in your pocket.

The wi-fi features of the camera work well. It's nice to be able to just come home, turn the camera on, connect to the network and send the photos to the computer downstairs - without having to actually go down there. If you're transferring larger numbers of photos this may not work as well, i usually connect via USB to do that.

The only negative I've found with the camera so far is that it doesn't feel as sturday as my old tank of a camera, the s400. it feels a little plasticky.

Yet I've come to love my DV-8 for just the traits that make it seem less appealing than better (and more expensive) digital cameras. It's the digital equivalent of the lomographic camera, those curious eastern European cameras beloved of hip kids for their idiosyncratic lack of picture fidelity. The pictures I take with my Mikona DV-8 regularly get the most compliments of any on my flickr account (gurdonark).

There's a liberation in using a simple camera with few features. Without a macro setting, one focuses on the "big picture". The absence of a flash
makes one appreciate the daylight. The photos take up very little space on one's computer due to the resolution. The low resolution can do magical things to bright colors, so that the yellow of winter prairie grass can shimmer. The camera features a lo-resolution setting which is almost surreal given its already-low resolution. It also has the makings of multi-shot settings, though the memory is so small as to make this almost beside the point.

Does the flash memory sometimes inexplicably erase pictures? Yes, especially when the batteries are near low. It's a good reminder not to get addicted to any one photo.

Is the software easy to use? Extremely.

What is the battery life of the camera? Surprisingly long.

Is it easy to use? Frighteningly.

I have come to love my DV-8 as my "second" camera, as it takes me places visually that finer cameras sometimes miss, somehow.

I bought this camera because it was inexpensive but still had most of the features I was looking for in a camera. It uses 2 AA batteries, but they do last quite a while. Overall, the camera is great. It takes great pictures and has a lot of options for settings. My favorite is a panoramic feature which I have had a little difficulty with but haven't read about it. It also comes with a CD which has great photoshopping features. The only problem I have noticed so far is the video capture. It does not take a good video by any means, the voice is okay but when playing videos back, it's extremely delayed and broken. So if you are looking for a camera for mostly video purposes, this camera isn't for you! Other than that, it's totally worth the price!
