Sony World Photography Awards 2009
Collaboration with The Princes Rainforests Project
Environment is central theme of this years awards
Student programme to span six continents
A major new initiative, in association with The Princes Rainforests Project (PRP), was announced on Monday 22 September, at the launch of the second annual Sony World Photography Awards 2009 - a truly global competition which honours both professional and amateur photographers.
Speakers at the launch at the Seippel Gallery in Cologne included Scott Gray, Managing Director of the Sony World Photography Awards, James Kennedy, General Manager of Marketing Communications at Sony Europe, Vanessa Winship, winner of the 2008 Iiris dor and Briony Mathieson from The Princes Rainforest Project. Also speaking were Ruth Eichhorn, Director of Photography, GEO Magazine and photographer and President of Magnum Photos, Stuart Franklin.
In addition to the 12 categories for professional photographers and the nine categories for amateurs, the Sony World Photography Awards are delighted to announce the partnership with The Princes Rainforests for the PRP Awards which complements this years theme of the environment.
Professional photographers will be submitting their portfolios in the hope of being selected for a fully-funded project to document the rainforest regions of the world. Amateur photographers will also be invited to submit their images for a global awareness campaign, using photography to educate and inform.
Also new to this years awards:
* An extended university programme which has grown from 10 universities in Europe in the inaugural year of the awards to 60 universities across six continents. The brief for this years student competition is to produce one image which highlights a single environmental issue specific to their country.
* The Festival @ The Sony World Photography Awards: a week-long festival of photography that takes place throughout the city of Cannes. Through talks, seminars, screenings, networking events, book signings and many other programmes and events, The World Photography Awards have created a programme for the photographic community to participate and network through. The Festival @ SWPA is also creating a new annual cultural event for the general public and all who enjoy contemporary art.
* A new category list for professional photographers spreading across the three photographic genres - photojournalism and documentary, commercial and fine art
* The introduction of the Sony Campaign Award for amateur photographers, which joins together a global obsession for football with the enthusiasm and passion of photography. Amateur photographers are invited to enter the Campaign Award with a single image that captures the beauty and spirit of football in unexpected places, with the winner having the chance of being one of the photographers used in Sonys forthcoming digital imaging 2009 campaign work.
* A global touring exhibition - Discovering a World of Images - showcasing images by the 2008 winners and finalists which through the course of a year will visit Belgium; Cologne; Tokyo; Delhi; New York; Singapore; Rio de Janeiro; Moscow and Melbourne.
The Sony World Photography Awards welcome submissions from every corner of the world. Last year the first year of the awards over 70,000 entries were received from 178 countries. For both professional and amateur photographers, the categories cover a broad range of subjects from photojournalism to sport, architecture to fashion, offering an all-encompassing competition for the photographic world.
Now, in just their second year, the awards have grown to become much more than an awards programme. It is a mix of festival events, exhibitions, award schemes and student programmes throughout the year. In April 2009 the WPA will host Festival @ The Sony World Photography Awards, a week-long celebration of photography at the Palais des Festival in Cannes attended by some of the most influential names in the photography industry from around the world. The highlight of the week is the awards ceremony gala dinner when the winners in all the categories will be honoured and the Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year will be announced.
Through its many initiatives, the Sony World Photography Awards aim to unite the international photographic community.
Vanessa Winship, winner of the 2008 Iiris dor comments: In its in augural year, Sony World Photography Awards have provided an opportunity for me to have had my work judged by some of the photographers whose own work I most respect and admire. In an industry as competitive as my own I was delighted to have been singled out with this series of portraits. About the Princes Rainforests Project
While some rainforest nations are already working to reduce deforestation, developing countries cannot solve the problems alone as it is the demand from the developed world for products such as palm oil, beef and soya that is driving deforestation. Many organizations are working to find ways to address the problem and to pay the rainforest nations for the vital services which they provide. PRP intends to act as a bridge to facilitate dialogue between these interests and to identify and develop practical solutions.
PRPs objectives are to find a way to:
 Establish true economic values for the services provided by the rainforests;
Identify possible sources of finance to pay for those services; and
Develop efficient and equitable transfer mechanisms, alongside the necessary technical and institutional capabilities that may be required, to ensure that the funds aimed at conserving rainforests also contribute to improving local peoples livelihoods in the long-term.
PRP is being assisted by a Steering Group comprising business leaders from Barclays, BSkyB, Climate Exchange Plc, Deutsche Bank, Finsbury, Goldman Sachs, KPMG, McDonalds, Man Group plc, Morgan Stanley, Rio Tinto, Shell, Sun Media Group as well as key figures from the World Bank, Coalition for Rainforest Nations and the Global Canopy programme.

I am not a new photographer, but this award has certainly assisted in allowing new audiences to see my work, an important and necessary aspect to anyone working in a visual medium.

 Establish true economic values for the services provided by the rainforests;

The contest invites eligible photography enthusiasts, from April 22nd to September 30th, 2008, to enter the contest by submitting images from any park or monument in America. Participants are invited to enter their "Inspirational Nature Images," the theme for this year's contest. Canon is also enhancing the photo contest by extending the age range of eligible participants to non-professional photographers ages 13 and up.
"A picture captures a moment in time, but the right picture triggers an emotional reaction within people. Through our Photography in the Parks Photo Contest, we want people to seek out those inspirational images and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors while doing it," stated Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Canon U.S.A. "As an environmentally-conscious organization, we encourage everyone to enjoy the beauty of nature, and also to work to protect it."
The Canon Photography in the Parks Photo Contest

HELLO! Young Photographers Award
HELLO! is delighted to announce the launch of our inaugural Young Photographers Award as part of our 20th Anniversary celebrations this year.
Our award is open to photography students between the ages of 18 to 30 years, and has been devised and developed in conjunction with Nikon and Getty Images Gallery.
Launched on 7th May 1988, HELLO! was the first celebrity magazine in the UK and is often credited with single-handedly creating the celebrity magazine market, and has remained a dominant force in an increasingly competitive and fast-moving sector.
Synonymous with glamour, style and sophistication, HELLO! is passionate about photography, and this is reflected in the quality of our award-winning photo shoots.
In celebrating our milestone anniversary, it seems entirely fitting to offer aspiring young photographers the chance to showcase their work and to win that critical first commission. Demand for quality photographic work has never been greater as our culture becomes increasingly dominated by visual imagery.
The Prizes:
There will be a winner and a runner-up in each of the five categories. An overall winner and runner-up will then be decided by the judges. The winner will be the entrant whose photograph in the opinion of the judges demonstrates the greatest flair, technique and originality. The judges may also, at their discretion, nominate highly commended entries.
The winner will receive 5000 and have a commissioned shoot published in HELLO! magazine. The runner-up will receive 2500 and have a two day internship with a leading Getty Images photographer in the area of his/her choice i.e. News, Sport, Entertainment or Creative photography. In addition all the category winners will receive a Nikon D40 kit, and the category runners-up will each receive a Nikon Coolpix P60.
The judges will present the prizes at an exhibition of the winning entries at Getty Images Gallery at the end of September 2008.

Canon Fan Foto Online Competition Kickstarts UEFA EURO 2008 Fever for Amateur Photographers
LONDON, April 10 2008 Canon Europe, world-leader in imaging solutions and official sponsor of the UEFA European Football Championship, is proud to announce its support for the UEFA Canon Fan Foto photo gallery and accompanying competitions which are now live on the Official Website of UEFA EURO 2008, www.euro2008.com.
Running up to and during the tournament, Fan Foto will give sports fans from across Europe the chance to upload their football images and win fantastic Canon sponsored prizes, with one overall winner enjoying a truly unforgettable Grand Prize a pitch-side sports photography experience with UEFA at a top UEFA EURO 2008 match. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is the only way a member of the public will be able to join the worlds best professional sports photographers on the touchline at UEFA EURO 2008.
In the months leading up to the biggest event in the 2008 European football calendar, Canon Fan Foto will capture the anticipation and excitement from the perspective of the football fan. Any football related photo can be uploaded, and visitors to the site can rate their favourites using a simple thumbs up or thumbs down system.
Every time a visitor uploads a new picture to the Fan Foto gallery, Canon will also make a donation of one Euro to its official humanitarian partner, the Red Cross*. In addition, when visitors to the site vote for their favourite image, Canon will make a fifty cent donation to the Red Cross. Total donations to the Red Cross via the Fan Foto site will be capped to fifty thousand Euros for the duration of the competition.
Every week until 5th June, the most popular image as voted by visitors to the Fan Foto site will win fantastic Canon prizes with 14 PowerShot SX100 IS cameras up for grabs in the lead up to the tournament. The PowerShot SX100 IS boasts an eight megapixel sensor, Digic III processor for super-fast performance and a stunning 10x optical zoom capability making it perfect for capturing superb-quality match day images.
Even bigger prizes are available to entrants whose images are voted for by the Fan Foto professional jury a panel of experts from Canon and Getty Images, one of the worlds most respected photo agencies. Each one of the best 11 images contributed to Canon Fan Foto and selected by the panel will be announced between 27th May and 6th June.
All winners in the best 11 Category will each receive a pair of VIP tickets and travel to a Group Stage game (including flights, hotel accommodation and transfers) and a Canon EOS 450D digital SLR camera, Canons latest addition to the world famous EOS range and the perfect introduction to the world of serious photography.
The Fan Foto professional jury will also pick one Grand Prize winner, who will have the opportunity to enjoy a pitch-side seat alongside UEFA-accredited photographers at the Austria v Germany Group A match in Vienna on June 16th.
For those not fortunate enough to win one of the many prizes on offer before the competition kicks off, there will be another opportunity for fans attending the UEFA European Football Championship to win a PowerShot SX100 IS camera. Between 7th June and 29th June, the Show Me Your Ticket! competition will reward one lucky fan who uploads the most unusual or creative image of themselves proudly displaying their ticket for any UEFA EURO 2008 game.
James Leipnik, Chief of Communication and Corporate Relations, Canon Europe, said: Canon created Fan Foto during the UEFA 2004 European Championships and was overwhelmed by the number of submissions from football fans all over the world. Football brings communities, countries and individuals together in shared joy, despair and excitement and our hope is that this years Fan Foto competition will help capture the emotion and anticipation of UEFA EURO 2008.
David Farrelly, Editor-in-Chief, UEFA Media Technologies, added: "It is clear that the digital boom has made photography a more accessible hobby than ever before, and, with its colour, excitement and emotion, what better subject matter is there for the enthusiastic amateur photographer than football? The quality of submissions in 2004 surprised and impressed everyone. We are very excited to be involved with Canon and we look forward with them to seeing what talent the 2008 competition will unearth."
The Canon FanFoto gallery can be found at www.euro2008.com/canonfanfoto. The competition will be open from 29th February until 29th June.
