Warrior Character design tips and technique

Warrior Character design tips and technique and step by step art process continue here is part 3. The first previous two post are mainly to capture the idea of the design element of the character, then establishing values (paint light and dark) or light source of the image.
In part three process, I am adding a dominant color along with complimentary accent colors and execute more design element to tight the piece together...and possibly some under lighting and some other secondary stuff that will make the character unique but still in the category of what it is.

Another important element in character concept design is you have to be able to convey his, her, or its personality and posibly its origin. Remember, you have only one shot to get the first impression out what kind of a character it is because it's a one piece of character concept design. Interesting looks alone do not necessarily make for a good character; its personality is key as well. A characters personality can be revealed through its poses, attitude, silhouette and what comes along with it such as costumes, weapon, etc. All the elements you put into your character will convey its origin and hopefully personality or persona. Is it intimidating? Costume can say a lot about a person like where or when it cames from, if you do your homework right... it should convey right away if it is from the Far East, medieval, rome, future, etc. The personality of your character doesnt have to be particularly agreeable, but it does need to be other than interesting so research about patterns, design of any particular culture to accent your design would definitely help.

Warrior Armor character design tutorial part 2

Warrior Armor character design tutorial part 2. Continued from the previous post, part 1, rough character concept painting.
Just got some time to continue fleshing out this drawing or painting of this dark barbaric warrior character. I was just design the character on the go though I do have some kind of a theme in mind but not totally flesh out.
As I paint I adapt the costume design and armor to what I see fits the mood of the character. In this session, I just get to finish up the design of the helmet mostly and part of the armor. There is still a lot of lighting and painting to be done.
Hopefully I will get some more time to work on it again this weekend.

For similar tutorials with videos on how to draw and paint portraits tutorials go watch Character Design Face Male Merchant Character, or Drawing Male Face Swordman and Learn how to draw and paint face. Also a little more basic lesson for step by step drawing "Drawing humans head female face how to" and step by step still images go to digital painting and drawing learn to draw and How to draw face and head shading. Well, hope these instructions and tips are helpful.
As for figures, go watch Drawing body muscle torso anatomystep by step and video and Drawing arm muscles bicep tricep video. And you can always look up the thumbnails on top of this blog and select one or the right side column of the blog.
Again most of your questions that you will ask me, are on this blog. Just look around because by the time I will get to your e-mails...it might be weeks. Good luck. :)

Rough character concept painting Barbaric Warrior armor

Rough character concept painting Barbaric Warrior armor. Quick sketch or speedpainting for doom and gloom executioner dude.
I just finally get some times to sit around the computer on my free time to doodle out something. Lots of you have ask me about how I did character and armor concept in Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 so in this post and several following post. I am going to try to show you the sketching, drawing and painting process of what I usually do for armors. Well, it is very similar to what I usually do with portraits and figures tutorials except there are more element involve, like materials (metal, cloth, leathers, etc.) that you will have to use values to convey the different between each material.
Thanks for all the kind words, comments and support you guys and girls have for idrawgirls.com I am glad this blog and website along with all the drawing and painting video tutorial serve its purpose. Not only you guys benefit from it, but also me. :) I am also hoping to progressing in my ability to execute a nice looking painting and concept art. And little by little, painting after painting over years I think I've progress a little also. It's really hard from time to time to find the way to achieve the result I really wanted. Painting is still really hard for me, to get better it takes a combination of a lot of things including lots of practice, observation and experiment and more. Anyway, here is what I have so far for the Barbaric Warrior type guy in armor. This one took me about 30-40 minutes or so because I didn't have any design in mind to begin with. It takes quite a bit of time to think of design and form altogether. So from here, the design might change here and there, but its essence should remain. I'm just designing on the go because I do this all the time so it is just a bit of struggle, but not so much. If I would concept environmental or props, I would have to look at tons of references and do a lot of thumbnails because I am not familiar with the elements. This remind me, before you do any concept design, don't forget thumbnails.

Here is step by step sketch and draw Barbaric Warrior:
*It's more like a thumbnail character exploration at the moment, just a little bit bigger.
