Canon Powershot A650 IS

If you've spent any time bouncing around DCHQ, you'll know that we've been tremendous fans of the Canon A640. It's a great camera, so great in fact, that we never thought much about how it could be made better. Lucky for us, Canon was thinking about that, and the A650 IS is their answer. Naturally, they've increased the number of megapixels, chasing the 12MP trend as they should. What's really got us excited however, is the introduction of image stabilization and an above-average 6x optical zoom! The 'A' series cameras are great, with simple automatic settings for novice users and full manual controls for those who want to experiment. The A650 IS is a camera you can grow into, and provides a lot of photographic potential in a small point-and-shoot package.

Canon A650 IS Specifications

* 12 megapixels
* 6x optical zoom / 4x digital zoom
* Lens-shift image stabilization
* JPEG file format
* Movie mode with sound
* Auto and manual focus
* Auto and manual exposure
* ISO 80-1600
* 2.5-inch swivel LCD display
* Secure Digital memory storage (32MB card included)

Canon Powershot S5 IS

Once more, Canon delves into the extended zoom field and comes up with a decent update to their already well-liked cameras. The S5 IS picks up where the S3 and S2 IS left off (what, no S4?), with a long 12x image stabilized zoom lens and 8 megapixel sensor. The biggest addition to this model is the Face Detection auto focus, which is smart enough to figure out that you're trying to take a picture of someone's face and not something ten feet behind them. For current S3 or S2 users, this isn't a tremendous step up from what you've already got, but if you're someone who hasn't yet experienced the impressive quality of the 'S' series yet, the S5 is a nice, fresh entry-point.

Canon S5 IS Specifications

* 8 megapixels
* DIGIC III Image Processor

* JPEG file format
* 12x optical zoom / 4x digital zoom

Canon PowerShot G7

The Canon PowerShot G7 is a sturdy, advanced camera for serious users, with a large 10-megapixel sensor and 6x optical zoom. The G7 replaces the Canon G6, now about two years old, and is a nice middle ground between point-and-shoot cameras and digital SLRs. The G7 features a "shift-type" form of optical image stabilization, using tiny, internal gyroscopes to compensate for hand movements and other jitters that may cause blurring. Keep in mind, the G7 does not feature the RAW file format, so if you're looking for a real heavy-duty shooter, you'll have to look to SLRs like the Digital Rebel XTi/400D.

Canon G7 Specifications

* 10 megapixels
* 6x optical zoom / 4x digital zoom
* Auto focus, auto and manual exposure
* "Shift-type" image stabilization
* Movie mode with sound
* JPEG file format
* ISO 80-1600
* 2.5-inch LCD
