Header Challenge 22nd December 2010 The Light.

Well Christmas is almost upon us so this is the last header challenge before Christmas. This week it has been my turn to choose the theme for us to create our header on.

I chose the Light. I thought it would give everyone a good scope to come up with something creative, it will be interesting to see what the others come up with.

My first thought was that I wanted to use candles as my light

but, I felt it needed a little bit more

the light-1-3

so as it is Christmas (or very nearly) I added Jesus to the photo as he is regarded as bringing light to the world at Christmas.

Now for my header to fit it needs to be in the landscape format so I had a bit of a play adding extra candles and foliage

In the end Ive gone for a shot taken very low to the ground to get the angle I wanted.

I hope you like it.

I wonder what my fellow headbangers have come up with this week for their headers.

Remember this Christmas to add the true light to your Christmas celebrations.

Colour gives an edge to photos

Continuing from my post Colour Red, Standing out from the crowd Id like to show that it is not only man made objects that stand out from the crowd due to their vibrant colours but also nature has its own way of displaying itself in fiery colours.

Take this scene

portfolio-2-5

The blossom on the tree and the tulips around the base shout out look at me! Look at me!

Flowers by their nature are often brightly coloured in a bid to attract insects to help them pollinate.

It is often us humans that take second place to the wonderful displays put on my mother nature, although this clown is doing his best to contradict everything I have just said.

Vibrant colour whether it is supplied by nature or man can certainly help to make a striking and memorable photograph.

Daisy and Rose in the garden!

I popped out in to our garden this afternoon to see Daisy and Rose enjoying the sunshine, well what was left of it, its gone a bit overcast today.

The way the Daisies have clumped in this photograph reminds me of the expensive floral decorations you see in churches for weddings (ok, maybe not of daisies though).

The perfectly formed petals of this giant Daisy, (sorry don't know official name) are a wonder to behold. Isn't nature great!

Daisy's friend Rose was also coming out to play as well so I thought I'd better take a photo of her too, mustn't have them getting jealous.
The roses subtle colours against the green of the foliage was beautiful to behold.

Pebbles in the garden

I decided yesterday to play about taking some photos of the pebbles in our front garden.

I know it sounds pretty boring as subject matters go. So I tried to make them more interesting.

This was one of my first compositions. Not so good I thought especially as I seem to have chopped the top of the plant off.

Next I thought a closer crop to try and make more use og the foliage, (probably should have tidied uo the dead wood on the plant, but then that's nature).

Going in even tighter, gets rid of the dead wood but emphasises the shapes of the stones more.

Finally I went for the full zoom. elliminated the plant completly relying solely on the colours shapes and textures of the stones to pull it off.

Tell me what you think, I'm always looking for viewpoints.
Which do you think is the best and maybe more important why?

The art of photo composition

One of the key arts of taking a good photograph is its composition.

Have you ever had a photo like the one here that was just, well, boring!

There's no focal point. The eye has nowhere to rest. The eye may flow with the water but it doesn't lead anywhere.

If you change the perspective and perhaps add a bit of foliage you get this.

This shot gives a bit more by showing the fast moving stream with a strand of foliage.

Its better but still not brilliant.

Lets try yet another angle.

Here the stream has been framed by the tree.

This allows a good comparison with the fast movement of the water and the stillness of the tree.

Its not perfect but of the 3 it is well on its way to getting there.
