The Zi8 is one of the best pocket camcorders around, but maybe the biggest. The Playsport takes the Zi8's guts�including its 1080p video, 5MP still photo sensor�and crams them into a small, waterproof shell. And? It's cheaper.

Like the Zi8, the Playsport shoots 1080p video at 30fps, as well as 720p at 30 or 60fps. Video is stabilized�which works fairly well to reduce image shimmering in the Zi8�and displayed on a 2.0-inch LCD. Storage comes by way of SDHC, while power draws from a rechargable Li-Ion battery. Basically, it is the Zi8, except it's noticeably more compact, and it'll shoot video up to 10 feet underwater.

It's one of the first seriously rugged pocket cams on the market, but it won't be the last�as cellphone cameras and regular point-and-shoots start to take better video, dedicated pocket cams will have to do something special to justify their existence. Hence, the swimming. The Playsport will go on sale in April, for $150.

Kodak's first wave of cameras basically embodied the commodity point-and-shoot: they were cheap, simple, and not particularly good. The Slice, their first touchscreen P&S, is their first attempt at something better.

The Slice is the only camera that stands out in Kodak's new P&S line, not just for its touchscreen, but for its price. $350 gets you 14MP still shots and 720p, 30fps video, optical image stabilization, a Lithium Ion battery, and facial recognition and tagging. It's a sleek little slice slab of phone, but honestly, touchscreen point-and-shoot isn't?

$350 isn't play money, and it edges dangerously close to high-end point-and-shoot territory, where it'd have to compete with the likes of the Canon S90, which seems like a pretty terrible idea. But with these kinds of cameras�that is, featureless rectangular prisms that are supposed to take pictures�the proof in in the pictures. [Kodak]

With a flip-out USB plug, HDMI out and an easily accessible SD card slot, this is clearly a 'premium' mix of features for the class, but the $180 pricetag keeps the device firmly grounded in Walmart-friendly reality. Other odd perks like a line-in jack and 1080p have us scratching our heads -- but in a good way. Overall, we'd feel pretty comfortable saying the footage is about the best you can obtain at this pricepoint. Colors are great, the image stabilization isn't a gimmick (sorry, Flip), and if you squint hard enough you can almost believe the 1080p is 1080p. Still, the camera is hampered by its cheap approach to processing and compressing the footage it's taking in -- despite its limitations, we'd say the iPhone 3GS is besting most cheap pocket camcorders on this front, motion just looks much more fluid. But don't take our word for it, check out a couple of video samples after the break.

Yeah, you don't really need 1080p in a compact like this. You know it, we know it. Kodak probably knows it too. Still, it's always pretty wild to pick up a little piece like this and know it can shoot to a native resolution that our parents can't even pronounce. The new Zi8 is certainly bulky for a 'pocket' camcorder, but makes up for it by sporting a rechargeable battery, line-in audio jack, HDMI out, 2.5-inch LCD and even keeping the pop-out USB plug around for old times sake. The perks of face recognition for improved exposure and gyroscope-based image stabilization are also pretty snazzy at this $180 pricepoint. We still aren't quite sold on the way this camera (like most of these compacts) processes video -- it seems to do a lot of damage to frame-to-frame motion, something that Apple fought off pretty well with the iPhone 3GS -- but we're going to take one home and test it out a little before we throw down a verdict.

While videophiles might shudder to think it, Pure Digital's crappy Flip, the little YouTubecam that could, has changed a lot about how a lot of folks approach video capture -- $590 million worth of change, according to Cisco. Kodak jumped into the market last year with one of the earliest HD models, the $179 Zi6. Now they've followed up with the Zx1, a $149 'rugged' camera for, um, ruggedness. They're aiming the camera at outdoor types, but with a smaller form factor, better build, lower price, HDMI output, and 60fps 720p recording (the original maxes out at 30fps 720p), about the only thing you'll be missing from the Zi6 is a macro mode.
