Canon Fan Foto Online Competition Kickstarts UEFA EURO 2008 Fever for Amateur Photographers

LONDON, April 10 2008 Canon Europe, world-leader in imaging solutions and official sponsor of the UEFA European Football Championship, is proud to announce its support for the UEFA Canon Fan Foto photo gallery and accompanying competitions which are now live on the Official Website of UEFA EURO 2008, www.euro2008.com.

Running up to and during the tournament, Fan Foto will give sports fans from across Europe the chance to upload their football images and win fantastic Canon sponsored prizes, with one overall winner enjoying a truly unforgettable Grand Prize a pitch-side sports photography experience with UEFA at a top UEFA EURO 2008 match. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is the only way a member of the public will be able to join the worlds best professional sports photographers on the touchline at UEFA EURO 2008.

In the months leading up to the biggest event in the 2008 European football calendar, Canon Fan Foto will capture the anticipation and excitement from the perspective of the football fan. Any football related photo can be uploaded, and visitors to the site can rate their favourites using a simple thumbs up or thumbs down system.

Every time a visitor uploads a new picture to the Fan Foto gallery, Canon will also make a donation of one Euro to its official humanitarian partner, the Red Cross*. In addition, when visitors to the site vote for their favourite image, Canon will make a fifty cent donation to the Red Cross. Total donations to the Red Cross via the Fan Foto site will be capped to fifty thousand Euros for the duration of the competition.

Every week until 5th June, the most popular image as voted by visitors to the Fan Foto site will win fantastic Canon prizes with 14 PowerShot SX100 IS cameras up for grabs in the lead up to the tournament. The PowerShot SX100 IS boasts an eight megapixel sensor, Digic III processor for super-fast performance and a stunning 10x optical zoom capability making it perfect for capturing superb-quality match day images.

Even bigger prizes are available to entrants whose images are voted for by the Fan Foto professional jury a panel of experts from Canon and Getty Images, one of the worlds most respected photo agencies. Each one of the best 11 images contributed to Canon Fan Foto and selected by the panel will be announced between 27th May and 6th June.

All winners in the best 11 Category will each receive a pair of VIP tickets and travel to a Group Stage game (including flights, hotel accommodation and transfers) and a Canon EOS 450D digital SLR camera, Canons latest addition to the world famous EOS range and the perfect introduction to the world of serious photography.

The Fan Foto professional jury will also pick one Grand Prize winner, who will have the opportunity to enjoy a pitch-side seat alongside UEFA-accredited photographers at the Austria v Germany Group A match in Vienna on June 16th.

For those not fortunate enough to win one of the many prizes on offer before the competition kicks off, there will be another opportunity for fans attending the UEFA European Football Championship to win a PowerShot SX100 IS camera. Between 7th June and 29th June, the Show Me Your Ticket! competition will reward one lucky fan who uploads the most unusual or creative image of themselves proudly displaying their ticket for any UEFA EURO 2008 game.

James Leipnik, Chief of Communication and Corporate Relations, Canon Europe, said: Canon created Fan Foto during the UEFA 2004 European Championships and was overwhelmed by the number of submissions from football fans all over the world. Football brings communities, countries and individuals together in shared joy, despair and excitement and our hope is that this years Fan Foto competition will help capture the emotion and anticipation of UEFA EURO 2008.

David Farrelly, Editor-in-Chief, UEFA Media Technologies, added: "It is clear that the digital boom has made photography a more accessible hobby than ever before, and, with its colour, excitement and emotion, what better subject matter is there for the enthusiastic amateur photographer than football? The quality of submissions in 2004 surprised and impressed everyone. We are very excited to be involved with Canon and we look forward with them to seeing what talent the 2008 competition will unearth."

The Canon FanFoto gallery can be found at www.euro2008.com/canonfanfoto. The competition will be open from 29th February until 29th June.
