Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S2000 - Digital camera - compact - 10.1 Mpix - optical zoom: 3 x - supported memory: MS Duo, SD, MS PRO Duo, SDHC, MS PRO-HG Duo - black Review

You know what you're in for when you are in the market for a entry level camera such as the DSC-S2000. Granted, the Sony DSC-S2000 is not exactly the cheapest entry level model out there, but the S2000 has a few advantages over those from more popular manufacturers such as Nikon (like the L21) and Canon (like the A495) that might make you spend a few extra dollar for it.

For such a cheaply built camera (it's very plastic-ky, the silver version looks alot better but are very difficult to find, even in stores), here are some of the features that you wouldn't expect from the gadget maker:

1) A standard graphic user interface identical to current Sony Cybershot cameras.
2) Steady Shot (digital)
3) Smile Shutter
4) Face detection
5) I (Intelligent) mode
6) Scene mode
7) P (programmable) mode
8) 640x480 VGA video recording
9) Automatic macro mode
10) Support for both Sony memory sticks and SD cards
11) Continuous advance (burst)
12) Full resolution 10.1 MP capture up to ISO 3200.

The camera's sensor has been elevated from last year's DSC-S series, showing a much improved color reproduction at high ISO settings (1600 and 3200). Althought without the BIONZ processor, the pictures tend to show noticeable noise from ISO 400 and up. The camera response time also fall behind its more expensive siblings.

Here's a list of items you might wish to find on this little toy, but won't:

1) Creative style. The camera shoots in color, without any kind of selectable color effects such as B&W, Sepia, Vivid etc.
2) Speaker. The camera comes with a buzzer only to signal power on, focus and capture, which unfortunately makes the camera sounds cheap during operation. There's obviously no audio playback for recorded videos on the camera either.
3) No AV out. Just a USB connector for connecting the camera to your PC.
4) No bundled rechargeable batteries or charger. Expected for such an affordable package.

So there you have it. An entry level Sony Cybershot with not much to should about, but isn't exactly all bad, despite its less than appealing exterior. Sample pictures are availble under the user's section for review.
