Canons EOS Rebel XSi, the twelve-megapixel D-SLR announced back in January, has gained a sibling in the form of the Rebel XS. Replacing the existing Rebel XT, the XS increases the resolution from 8 to 10-megapixels and the preview screen from 1.8 to 2.5-inches. It also gains the XSis Live View, which allows photographers to frame their shots via the LCD rather than having to use the optical viewfinder.

Also carried over is the Digic III image processor, which in the XSi boosted start-up time to just 0.1s enabled up to 6/53 (Raw/JPEG) using continuous shooting mood at 3fps. Canon are yet to confirm the XS start-up time, but it too can manage an unlimited 3fps burst rate and has improved battery life. Theres also a 7-point autofocus system.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed - though Canon suggest itll be in the same range as the XT it replaces, which would peg it at around $630 to $740 - but we do know that there will be a beginners starter-kit that includes an image stabilization lens with the Rebel XS body. Specifically, it will include the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, also by Canon.
