Nikon answers with D60

HOT on the heels of Canons low-end DSLR announcement (see In.Tech, Jan 29), Nikon has answered the challenge with its D60, the latest in the companys budget range of DSLRs.

In terms of design, the D60 looks much like its younger sibling, the D40x, and even shares the same 10.2-megapixel image sensor.

However, underneath its svelte exterior, Nikon has enhanced both the software and hardware to bring it up to speed with the rest of its newer models.

The most interesting hardware feature is that the D60 has a completely new dust reduction system not only does it have the sensor shake mechanism to shake of stray dust particles that have landed on the sensors protective filter, but Nikon has also integrated an Airflow Control System which channels air (and dust) away from the image sensor when the shutter is opened.

Taking a page from DSLRs by Canon and Sony, Nikon has also integrated an eye sensor near the viewfinder so that the information display on the LCD will automatically turn off when you put your eye up to the camera, thus saving battery power.

On the software side, D60 comes with an interesting mode we havent seen in a DSLR until now it is called Stop-Motion Movie and it allows you to create stop-motion movie clips using a series of up to 100 consecutive JPEG files.
