Local photographer focused on furthering career

Saskatoon photographer Chad Coombs's images serve as peepholes into the manic fantasy world in which he lives.

The surreal view is enough to leave a psychologist begging for mercy. Good or bad, the goal is to elicit a reaction from the observer, he insists.

"I'm just a guy and his camera, trying to show people what I see, trying to disturb, make you think and feel," Coombs, 25, explained in a recent interview in his apartment.

Like his mind, his suite is a place where the limitations of reality can't constrain his imagination. The ceiling in one bedroom is concealed in Astroturf, while wispy cloud-like carpeting is spread across the floor.

"They (images) are like dreams: They can be interpreted in millions of different ways. So step into my head, read my consciousness and watch my inner thoughts. Not everyday is great and not every day is bad. This is just my world."

Lately, there's been some notable voyeurs and Coombs is beginning to reap global recognition.

His work is in two U.K.-based magazines this month and in the February 2008 issues of three other magazines. Last July, his inventive techniques got him a six-page spread in Digital SLR Photography magazine, another U.K. publication.

Not bad for a guy who really only started getting serious about the craft two years ago.

"At 25 I've already reached the goals I'd set for 40," he said.

A few Canadian publications also printed his stuff though he's still waiting to crack the U.S. market. But he took a significant step in that direction in October.
