Basically - the HLD-4 comes with a AA battery holder that takes 6 batteries just in case. I do not recommend relying on AA batteries to power the grip. It would be to costly. Instead buy a second BLM-1. But note the HLD-4 can operate with just 1 BLM-1. You will not gain any additional battery power for the camera, but you will gain a vertical shutter release on the body. Some also prefer the vertical grip when holding the camera in a horizontal position. I really like the camera both ways, but I am not picky about that feature.
