Kortnei's kitchen consultation -- before and after!

One of the great joys of this blog has been to help some of you with your homes through my consultations. I am so incredibly tickled and proud when you send me pictures of your progress. You should love your home, and it is my goal to make that happen for each and every one of you with these consults. Well...maybe not ALL. How about a bunch?

Take a look at how simple changes transformed Kortnei's kitchen...

My suggestions included lighter bamboo shades in the windows that she could close for privacy and then do some kind of drapes as well, on either side of the windows, instead of hanging in front.

Before:
I liked the white drapes, but I told Kortnei this is a spot she could really add some color and highlight this cool area of the kitchen. I suggested a panel on either side of the larger window, and then one on the outside of each window.

As usual, I suggested she consider finding a fabric she loved to add to the drapes or make her own. LOOK what she did!:
I. adore. those. drapes. Squeal!

Of course, I have to suggest some kind of woodwork SOMEWHERE. And that somewhere was her island/peninsula. It was such a feature between the family room and kitchen:
Kortnei took my advice on the beadboard and corbels and, well...swoon:
I love it!!!

Speaking of that area, I suggested three new black counter height chairs with backs on them instead of the stools, if her budget allowed. Her stools got lost just a bit and the large island could handle something darker and larger:
Because of her high ceilings, Kortnei was doing what we ALL want to do, which was decorating up. I have done it, I understand it. I don't have a problem with it, not one bit. But when you bring the accessories down, you bring the room down and make it a bit cozier.

Before:

She already had a great start with accessories. I suggested some large items because of the space above the cabinets, in little vignettes in the corners so it didn't feel too cluttered.

After:
I loved her table but the chairs seemed a bit dark, so I suggested recovering her chairs with a new lighter fabric. I suggested a fabric that would work with her new drapes.

Before:
She went the extra mile and purchased new, beautiful white chairs with new cushions in colors that work with the walls and drapes:
Didn't she do awesome? I am in LOVE with those chairs!

Here's the full view of her kitchen before:
And the after:
Gorgeous!! I am so proud of you Kortnei, this is fantastic! There were a few changes Kortnei asked about doing that I didn't think she needed to worry about -- and I'm glad she didn't do them. Her wall color worked perfect, the black cabinets were awesome as is. She had a great start to this room.

It didn't happen overnight and it shouldn't...you should take your time to do it the way you want to, and find things that you love for your space.

So there you have it...an idea of what a consultation involves. All it takes is a little bit of work on your part, some trust in moi, and a week or two for me to get back to you. ;) If you are interested in a consultation, they are $30 per room. All you need to do is use the Paypal button on the left of my site and then e-mail your pictures, thoughts and questions.

I'm so glad you love your kitchen Kortnei! If anyone else that has purchased a consult wants to share their room, please let me know!

Web Analytics For 404 Errors

404 errors are a fact of life on the internet. 404 error is a message returned by a server in response to a request for a page that does not exist on the server (http 404 error code).

Let me illustrate this with an example:

A visitor comes to a site, bookmarks a page and then leaves the site.
Next week the owner of the site decides to launch a new site completely replacing the old pages with the new pages (urls were different).
Next month the visitor comes back to the site via the bookmark but the page she bookmarked does not exist as it was removed during the site redesign.
She will get a 404 error message from the server.

Reasons for 404 Errors

404 errors can occur due to numerous reasons:

  1. Misspelled links A misspelled URL in a hyperlink on the site can causing a broken link and hence a 404 error message.
  2. Bad Site Map A site map is an xml file containing a list of all the pages on the site. It is usually meant for the search engines to index the pages on a site. A misspelling in a site map can cause the search engines to look for the pages that do exist on the server. Generally theses pages (broken links) wont be visible to the visitors but they will show up in the search engines indexing report such as the Google webmaster tools. Some sites also show the site maps to the visitors as a form of site navigation; in those cases the visitors will see the 404 errors.
  3. Site Redesign Site redesigns are a leading cause of the missing pages. Site owners redesign the sites, completely replacing the old pages without thoroughly thinking about the pages that might have been linked all over the web, indexed by the search engines, bookmarked by the visitors etc. Visitors who clicks on old links, bookmark etc. are greeted with the 404 error messages when they click on those links to arrive on the site.
  4. Sever Unavailable 404 error messages can also occur when the server is unavailable.

Below is an example of a standard 404 error message

If standard 404 error page is the first page that a visitor sees when she arrive on a site, what will her reaction? As shown in the picture above, you cant even tell which site this page belongs to. It is a dead end. Visitors dont know where to go. What would a visitor do in this situation? She will most likely leave the site. She will go back to where she came from. The site has just failed to engage her.

Lets imagine a similar situation in the offline world. Think about how you would feel if you enter a local supermarket looking for a toothbrush and are immediately taken to the location in the store where the toothbrushes aisle is suppose to be. When you arrive at that location, not only that you dont find the aisle because the supermarket recently rearranged the store and move the aisle but also that the whole supermarket goes dark and all you see is the exit door. You will, for sure, run towards the exit door. Thats what a standard 404 error pages does, the site goes dark and the only thing a visitors sees is the back button or the close button on the browser.

Custom 404 Error Pages

Now imagine that instead of the store going dark, the customer sees a friendly associate who politely says Sorry, we recently rearranged our store and the aisle you are looking for have been moved. May I show you the new location of the aisle (or some flavor of it). Friendly associate on the web in this situation is called Custom 404 error page (message), which will say Sorry the page you are looking for does not exists anymore or has been moved, here are few links that might help you (or some flavor of it).
A custom 404 error page allows the site to provide a message other than a generic server error message (Figure 1). A custom 404 is an opportunity for the sites to engage the visitors whom they might have lost otherwise.

How do you create a custom 404 error page?

Create a page with a message that you want your visitors to see when they encounter 404 error messages and save it as 404.html (you can use other names and the page extensions as well). Web servers have a setting which allows you to set the page that you want the visitors to see when they encounter the 404 errors. In this case you might set it to 404.html. (Contact your IT department or hosting companies to get further details).

Here is an example of a custom 404 error page

There are several ways to customize your 404 error page. Be creative when designing the 404 page, this is your last chance to reengage a visitors. (I will show you some examples in future post)

Web Analytics and 404 error page

Another benefit of creating a custom 404 page is that you can put your web analytics tag on the page to report and analyze the 404 pages. Web Analytics reports can show you the pages (links) that are causing 404 error messages on your site. You can also find out which pages have the bad links, what keywords, external links etc. are driving users to those non-existent pages.

Tracking 404 pages in Web Analytics

Here is an example of Google Analytics Code to track the 404 pages

This code appends 404: in front of the page name that triggers the 404 error so that it is easy for me to filter the Google Analytics reports for the 404 error pages.

The same concept can be used in the other web analytics tools such as Omniture, Webtrends, Unica, Coremetrics etc.

There are two reports that I frequently use to analyze the 404 pages
  1. Top Content

Since I prefixed my 404 pages with 404:, I can easily filter out the 404 pages in this report. This report gives me all the pages that are triggering 404 error messages. This report also shows me how big the problem is and if I am losing visitors on these pages or not.
If your custom 404 page is unable to engage the visitors (high exit rate or bounce rate) then you should consider changing the content/design etc. of the page. (I am looking into how you can conduct A/B testing on a 404 page).

You can also drill down into each of the page and do further navigational analysis to see the pages that the visitors saw before they got the 404 error page.

This leads you to the pages that have old/misspelled links. To track down the external links and sources, that have bad links to your site, you will need to look at the top landing pages report.
  2. Top Landing Pages

A filter on 404: in this report will show you the landing pages that result in the 404 errors. Use this report to drill down to the external sources of errors e.g. the external links, keywords etc. Below is an example of a report that shows that most of the 404 for a page on this site occurred from links in the emails.

Further analysis of the emails led me to the malfunction links.
Do you have 404 error messages stories, examples to share? Send them to me.

Unveiling R-O-B-ot

Last night outside the Storefront for Art and Architecture the robot that will help build the Pike Loop installation was unveiled. Literally:

On display now in the Storefront space are videos of previous installations by Gramazio & Kohler, Architecture and Digital Fabrication in Europe -- this is the first 1:1 scale installation in the States -- and information on the Pike Loop. A few blocks away the robot will be on full display for four weeks constructing a brick wall of "more than seven thousand bricks aggregate to form an infinite loop that weaves along the pedestrian island."

The installation is part of the ongoing research of Gramazio & Kohler , ETH Zurich and Keller AG Ziegeleien. A previous design includes the Martha und Daniel Gantenbein Winery in Flsch, Switzerland by Bearth & Deplazes Architekten, in which bricks in a concrete frame express an image of overlapping circles from a distance.

Part of me really wants to like the wall-building robot, but I'm skeptical of the intentions behind the implementation of its technology. Basically it responds to the lack of craftsmanship today, the prevalence of surface image in architectural expression, and the continuity between drawing and building, where the computer is the constant not the individual. Certainly the technology allows for the exploration of form and process in architecture, though much of what I see is a slight variation on undulating masonry forms achieved years before computers infiltrated architectural production. Regardless, in drawing form Pike Loop looks to be doing some interesting things structurally, not just formally, so I'm curious to see how it turns out. The wall's targeted completion is October 27th.

Improvement In Case-Shiller Housing Index - Will It Last?

Over the past couple months, I have had many people tell me "the housing bottom is in". Supposedly the stock market bottom is in as well, and in just a couple years the S&P will be back at 1500. Really?

Stock market bulls have no idea how weak earnings will be as consumers continue to retrench and unemployment climbs. As noted previously a "Buy The Dip" Mentality Is Fully Entrenched among fund managers and individual investors in spite of the fact Insiders Dump Shares at Fastest Pace in 2 Years.

Moreover, housing bulls ignore shadow inventory, seasonal factors, and temporary effects of the soon to expire $8,000 first-time home buyers credit.

Shadow Housing Inventory Will Halt A Housing Recovery

iStockAnalyst is reporting Shadow Housing Inventory Will Halt A Housing Recovery.
Any optimist talking up a housing recovery might want to pause and look deeper into the housing crisis. Amherst Securities Group analysts believe the market faces about 7 million properties that are likely to be seized by lenders have yet to hit the open market. There are two sources that contribute to a huge shadow housing inventory; ARM mortgages which are due to reset now through 2012 and current home owners who are struggling to make payments.

Assuming no other properties are on the market, it would take 1.35 years to sell this inventory based on the current pace of existing-home sales, analyst Laurie Goodman.

The favorable seasonality will be over come the October housing numbers and the reality of a 7-million-unit housing shadow inventory is likely to set in.

The uptick in the housing numbers are due to banks slowing down the filing of forecloses due to the government loan modification program, the spring/summer seasonality strength of the housing market, buyers rushing to take advantage of the soon to expire $8,000 first-time home buyers credit and the record low mortgage rates thanks to the Federal reserve buying treasuries to help keep mortgage interest rates artificially low but that program is due to be over during the 1st quarter of 2010.

When the shadow inventory is unleashed and government is out of stimulus gun powder for the housing market, reality that the housing correction is not over will set back in.
In Breakfast with Dave, Rosenberg is wondering: Improvement In Case-Shiller Housing Index - Will It Last?
There is no sense in quibbling with the CS home price data, which continue to show improvement a 1.6% gain in July on top of +1.4% in June and +0.5% in May. These numbers, remember, were for July when the Red Sox were still leading the AL East.

We already see from the August data-flow that average resale home prices fell 2.0% both on an average and median basis in their worst showing since January, and median new home prices collapsed 9.5% MoM and on average fell 6.0%. And, some homebuilders are now back resorting to national discounting programs to lure buyers after all, it is now taking builders a record 13 months to make a sale upon completion.

Moreover, the supply data have been distorted in part because of all the inventory that has been held off the market on bank balance sheets, but this cannot last forever. Estimates we have seen, peg the shadow inventory at 7 million housing units those in foreclosure, those just entering the process, and those that have been in arrears for the past year but have yet to receive a notice. Tack these on to the official unsold inventory count of 3.6 million and what we are talking about is an overhang equivalent to 25 months supply. It is truly hard to believe that home prices are doing anything more than a wiggle right now in a long-term downtrend; a wiggle, mind you, that has come courtesy of unprecedented government support.
Housing bulls can and will believe what they want. However, the reality is houses (especially low-end houses) are selling for the same reason cash-for-clunkers temporarily improved auto sales: free money and no down-payments. Excuse me but isn't this what started the housing trouble in the first place?

Meanwhile, unemployment is rising and will likely keep rising for another year minimum. Rising unemployment will increase credit card writeoffs, foreclosures, and bankruptcies. This is not a pretty picture for the existing pie-in-the-sky earnings estimates or continued strength in housing.

A close scrutiny of the facts suggests neither the stock market bounce nor the housing bounce is close to sustainable. In theory, anything and everything can happen. However, not everything has equal odds of success.
